CCS’s Fostering Hope Initiative is spearheading distribution for the local Farmers to Families Food Box Program effort. Farmers to Families is one of the best examples of a creative and far reaching public, private response to the current COVID-19 crisis. The program eliminates waste, feeds families and benefits suppliers whose workforce as been impacted due to the closure of restaurants, hotels and other food service businesses. This USDA-sponsored program allows fresh foods to be packed, transported and distributed to people in need through community and faith-based organizations like CCS.
FHI community health workers are coordinating weekly with local schools, health and social services providers to deliver food to individuals and families experiencing hunger and food insecurity during the COVID crisis. To date, they have coordinated distribution of more than 2,400 food boxes. This represents a redistribution of more than $100,000 worth of food that would otherwise have gone to waste. The program is expected to continue through the end of the year.
