St. Mary Parish, the Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel and Catholic Community Services hosted the 15th annual St. Joseph the Worker Fundraising Dinner at St. Mary Parish Center in Mount Angel on Sunday, May 5. Nearly 200 community members, volunteers and partners came together to support St. Joseph Family Shelter. This year’s dinner raised $65,000, which was matched by a generous donor.
At the dinner, a first annual Caritas Award was presented to the Monks of Mount Angel Abbey for their continued partnership in sustaining St. Joseph Family Shelter and Mission Benedict. CCS Deputy Executive Director Josh Graves presented the award to Prior Vincent Trujillo, OSB, who accepted the award on the monks’ behalf. The award was inscribed with a quote from St. Bede the Venerable which read, “He alone loves the Creator perfectly who manifests a pure love for his neighbor.” Graves also presented the 2019 Outstanding Community Service Award to Kathy Eder-Deshon for her tireless efforts to plan, prepare and serve a delicious home-cooked meal to dinner guests at no cost to the Shelter and Mission. On her award were the words of Mother Teresa, “Spread love wherever you go. Let no one come to you without leaving happier.”
CCS Executive Director Jim Seymour offered recognition and thanks to Fr. Philip Waibel, Sr. Dorothy Jean Beyer and Sr. Jane Hibbard for their leadership, support and guidance; Kathy Eder-Deshon for organizing the dinner; St. Mary Parish volunteers for preparing the meal; Sr. Marietta Schindler and the Junior Catholic Daughters for serving; and the Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel for their ongoing prayers and partnership in sustaining St. Joseph Family Shelter.
